New Zealand is a great place to watch whales. It is amazing to see them leap out of the ocean, or just to see a flipper or a fluke (tail). Whales are mammals, like us, so they need to come up to the surface to breathe air through a blowhole. When they rest, whales sleep with only half the brain, so they remember to take air in: otherwise they would drown. They live in family groups called pods. Female whales are called cows, males are called bulls, and young whales are called calves.
