New Orleans will never forget 9 September 1965. It was the night of the full moon when Hurricane Betsy hit the city with a speed of 150 mph. It was the worst storm ever recorded in the 20th century. The River Mississippi rose more than 10 feet, broke the levees and became one body of water with the Gulf of Mexico. It caused the worst flooding in decades. The power lines broke, and the whole city was under water. Betsy changed a lot of people’s lives in a second. 76 people in Louisiana died. That was the largest loss since Audrey, the hurricane that had struck eight years earlier. Crops were ruined, farm animals drowned, ships sunk and fishing villages swept away. Practically all buildings in the city were destroyed or damaged. The President of the USA, Lyndon B. Johnson, arrived at once and visited the ruined areas. Betsy caused damage of more than $1 billion. Following the storm, city leaders and officials had to look ahead and reconsider the levee system. They decided to raise it 12 feet. That seemed enough to defend the city against any future strikes. Unfortunately, the new system failed exactly forty years later, during hurricane Katrina.
