Reading

1 Read the texts. Do the statements below relate to Nick, Martha, or both?

Nick
I’m an optimist when it comes to our future. I believe that people will use technology to make their lives better. For example, technology will make it possible to use clean forms of energy only, which will make our planet green and clean again. Technological developments will also enable space travel – maybe not that far away at first. But our solar system will definitely become a new tourist destination. We will also develop artificial intelligence further, but I don’t think it will become our enemy, as some SF movies predict. We will have to develop it responsibly.

Martha
I believe that Earth will be a nicer place to live in the future, and more peaceful. But the number of people living on Earth will rise, and there won’t be enough space for us all. We’ll have to find another home. I believe there are some good candidates in our solar system. As for technology, I’m a realist. Many people will lose their jobs because of robots: machines don’t need food or rest, so they are cheaper. But I don’t think machines will go to war against us. Technology will definitely bring many advantages, but we’ll have to be careful how we use it.

2a) Read the article about a new planet. What do the highlighted numbers refer to? Match them with the correct words.

Washington DC – A team of scientists today announced an important discovery: a new habitable planet! It is less than 200,000 light years away from our away from solar system. “This may seem like a long way away, but in space distance, this planet is just around the corner”, said Dr Miller, the team leader. The scientists have named this new planet 'Hope’. It has two suns, but they lie just outside the planet’s habitable zone. Still, calculations show that the planet has solid ground, an atmosphere – and water! Team biologists believe that there may be life forms on the planet: “Our calculations show that the average temperature of 20°C could mean that simple plant and animal life exists on land. Of course, we won’t know that for sure until we get there.” The planet rotates more slowly than Earth, around 2,000 km/h. This means that the days are longer. It also takes 512 days for the planet to complete a year. Dr Miller joked: “That would mean longer holidays than on Earth!” If you want to take a holiday on Hope, Dr Miller explained, hiking may be a good choice. You could hike far above the amazing 8,848 meters we have on Mount Everest. There are also oceans and other bodies of water on Hope. The US President congratulated the team of scientists, and promised them more funds to continue their research into a potential new home for humanity.

 Study Tip! READING
First read all the sentences taken out of the text. Then read the whole text. Read the text before and after the gap carefully: there will always be a connection between this text and the missing part of a sentence.

3 Read Martha's letter. Complete it with the missing parts of the sentences. Choose the letters A-I. There are two parts of the sentences you do not need.
