Listening Test 1
You will be presented with four listening exercises: two for each audio file.
We recommend choosing and doing only one exercise – either a) or b) – per audio file.
You can mix and match the exercises as you like.
A printable version of the exercises is available for download at the bottom of the page.
1 You are going to hear a short classroom report.
a) Choose the correct answer: T (True) or F (False).
Tips & tricks for solving Task 1 a):
- Before you listen, read all the sentences carefully.
- Find and underline key words and ideas in each sentence.
- Try to predict whether the sentence is true or false. Then listen to confirm your answer.
- The questions will be mentioned in the order you hear them in the recording.
- Be careful! The questions do not use the same words as the main text. They use different words and phrases with the same or similar meaning, or they contain information which is incorrect.
- You will hear the recording twice: don’t worry if you don’t get all the answers the first time.
- Use the second listening to check your answers.
b) Match the beginnings of sentences to their endings. There are two sentence endings that you do not need.
Tips & tricks for solving Task 1 b):
- Before you listen, read all the sentences carefully.
- Try to predict possible answers.
- The questions will be mentioned in the order you hear them in the audio. The answer options will appear randomly.
- Most of the time, you won’t hear the exact words that appear in the task: instead, you will hear a synonym or a paraphrase. Read the answer options carefully, and try to think of some words or phrases that might be used to express the information.
- Focus on key words while listening.
- You will hear the recording twice: don’t worry if you don’t get all the answers the first time.
- Use the second listening to check your answers.
2 You are going to listen to three passages about three different people.
a) Which passage is each sentence about? Choose the correct answer.
Tips & tricks for solving Task 2 a):
- Before you listen, read all the sentences carefully.
- Find key words and ideas in each sentence.
- The questions will appear in a random order, so it is very important that you know what information you need to listen for.
- The questions usually use synonyms of words that you hear in the recording. Read the answer options carefully, and try to think of other ways in which your key words might be expressed.
- You will hear the recording twice: don’t worry if you don’t get all the answers the first time.
- Use the second listening to check your answers.
b) Match the passages to the headings that best describe them. There is one heading you do not need. Mark it with X.
Tips & tricks for solving Task 2 b):
- Before you listen, study all the headings carefully.
- Find key words and ideas in each sentence.
- You will need to listen for the general meaning of what the speakers are saying. Think about what each heading might be about before listening. Listen carefully to check whether you can find any similar ideas in the passage.
- When doing this task in print, be careful: if you change one answer, you will have to change the others, as well.
- You will hear the recording twice: don’t worry if you don’t get all the answers the first time.
- Use the second listening to check your answers.
