1 Read this article about a holiday destination.
a) Choose the correct heading for each paragraph. There are three headings you do not need.
b) Read the text again, and choose the correct answer.
Tips & tricks for solving Task 1 a):
- Skim the text. Highlight or underline key ideas in the paragraphs. You do not have to understand every single word.
- Try to summarise the paragraph in your mind.
- Read the headings, and highlight or underline key words.
- Pay attention to headings which are similar to each other: they are there to distract you.
- Find similar ideas in the paragraph and the headings. Choose a suitable heading. Start with the obvious ones, and leave the more difficult ones until last. Match ideas, not words.
Tips & tricks for solving Task 1 b):
- Skim the text to see what it is about.
- Read the questions carefully, and highlight or underline key words. The questions will follow the same order in which the information is presented in the text.
- Scan the text. Find and highlight or underline the parts which contain answers to the questions.
- Read the answers carefully, and choose the one that corresponds to the answer you have found in the text. Check that the remaining options don’t fit.
- Be careful! The answer options do not use the same words and phrases as the main text. They use different words with the same or similar meaning. Try to understand what they mean, and look for the synonyms in the text.
- Sometimes the answer is not directly stated in the text, but there are clues leading you to the correct answer or leading you to eliminate some of the answers as the wrong ones.
2 Read this article about urban legends.
a) Complete the text with the missing sentence parts. There are two sentence parts that you do not need.
b) Read the text again, and choose the correct answer: T (True) or F (False).
Tips & tricks for solving Task 2 a):
- Skim the text for general understanding. Do not spend time trying to understand every single word.
- Start with answers which you consider obvious. Read the text on each side of the gap to make sure the chosen answer fits the topic.
- Try to identify the extra sentence parts which are there to distract you.
- Read through the completed text to make sure it makes sense.

- Skim the text to see what it is about.
- Read the questions carefully, and highlight or underline key words. Make sure you understand the general idea of each question.
- The questions will follow the same order in which the information is presented in the text.
- Scan the text. Find and highlight or underline the parts which are connected to the questions.
