PAST SIMPLE

positive    

Regular verbs: verb  + -ed/-d

Thomas worked in Paris last year.
He tried to change his job last August, but he couldn’t.
He stayed there two more months, and then he moved to Berlin.
He stopped in Milan and shopped there last week.

 

REMEMBER!   

  •  Verbs that end in -E:
             move + -d » moved
  • Verbs that end in -Y:
        a)  stay + -ed » stayed                 b) try + -ed » tried
             
    vowel y » yed                             consonant y » ied
  • With some verbs, we double the final consonant:
       plan + -ed » planned         stop + -ed » stopped        rob + -ed » robbed

Irregular verbs: irregular form

Thomas went to Berlin last November.
He bought a small house there.
Then he felt great!

Thomas didn’t work in London last year; he worked in Paris.
He didn’t plan to open a hotel; he planned to open a small restaurant.
He didn’t go to Madrid; he went to Berlin.
He didn’t buy a new car; he bought a small house.

 

yes/no questions    

Regular and irregular verbs: did + verb

Did  Thomas work in Paris last year?  Yes, he did.
Did  he plan to open a hotel?  No, he didn’t.
Did  he go to Berlin?  Yes, he did.
Did  he buy a new car?  No, he didn’t.

 

'Wh'-questions   

               They moved to England. (move)
               Did they move to England?
Where did they move?

               He went to school. (go)
               Did he go to school?
Where did he go?

When do we use past simple?

The past simple is used when we talk about a finished action/activity performed at a given time in the past.
The time of the action must be stated when using the past simple.
