Lesson 1A: Life always finds a way
Grassland is land covered in grass.
Such a region in Africa is called a savanna.
The weather is usually hot and dry.
When rain falls, the grass starts to grow.
A savanna is home to many grass-eating animals, such as buffaloes, zebras and wildebeest.
These animals are food for large predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Who wins these battles?
Buffaloes, for example, are stronger and bigger than lions, but lions are faster, so it is not easy to predict the winner.
Tundra covers a big area of land around the Arctic circle.
The land is frozen for much of the year.
In summer, when the sun finally comes out, the weather is much nicer and warmer.
The snow melts and grass starts to grow.
During this period animals are much happier, because they can find food.
Wolves and polar bears are top predators in these regions.
Mountains are areas that are much higher than sea level.
It is much warmer at the foot of the mountain than at the top.
The top parts of the mountains are too cold for trees to grow, but there is life there anyway.
These high places are homes to animals such as snow leopards, bears and goats.
There's not much food at the top, so life here is harder than lower down.
