6 Amazing facts about elephants
#1 There are three types of elephants.
Two types live in Africa: one in the savanna and one in the forest.
The third type lives in Asia.
Asian elephants have much smaller ears than African elephants.
#2 Everybody knows that elephants are the biggest land animals.
Did you know that the tallest elephant ever was four metres tall?
An average elephant is heavier than 150 men!
#3 Mother elephants carry their baby elephants in their wombs for 649 days, or 22 months.
When it is born, a baby elephant weighs around 110 kilos.
#4 An elephant has the longest nose of all animals.
It is called a trunk.
It is about two metres long and it weighs around 135 kilos.
#5 Elephants have got huge front teeth.
They are called tusks.
Tusks weigh around 45 kilos.
Elephants’ tusks are made of ivory.
That is why people kill lots of elephants every year.
#6 Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild, but not many live that long.
